About Kurt

Kurt A. Weiche

1947-1999

KurtOn Sunday May 30th, 1999 Kurt left us with memories of a man that lived 52 years but somehow gave us all more than a lifetime.   Kurt passed of a heart attack in his sleep after being diagnosed with heart disease two years earlier.
Friends, family and people were the bottom line with Kurt. Found in some of Kurt’s belongings was a fortune from a Chinese cookie. Someone obviously gave it to Kurt knowing it described him, it read "You are generous to an extreme and always think of the other fellow." His life was a reflection of this statement.

Kurt has a home full of honors, plaques and awards from many high school athletic programs for his participation and coverage through sports broadcast. Logging thousands of miles to bring listeners of KRWC high school sports was one of his biggest joys, in owning the radio station for over 13 years.  As an active community member Kurt was on numerous boards, comittees, volunteer groups and organizations ranging from Little League to Buffalo Days to Childrens Charities.

As a father, no one else could compare. Never and I mean never did either of his boys stare up at the stands during an athletic game or school function and not see their father. Kurt enjoyed his summers on the lake with his family water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing and relaxing. He seemed to have an interest or talent in every imaginable aspect he encountered. University of Nebraska football was his passion and many trips with his sons were made to Husker games in Lincoln. In many ways Kurt has more sons and daughters than one can count, his nieces were his daughters, and every friend of his sons to walk through the doors was loved like they were his own. To each and every one of you he missed you every minute you were not in the Weiche home. Many of you have shared with us that you can see our dad in us, but we see our father in every one of you. The smiles you have exchanged with him, the laughter and the jokes. Please stop us every chance you can and visit so we can see our father and best friend daily.

As his family we marveled at one mans ability to find time for so much, but watching other people receive his gifts were his biggest joys. One of Kurt’s favorite expressions for people was "for you, the sky is the limit." Those who knew Kurt know that not even the sky could limit this man. He will continued to be loved and will always be missed. Kurt Weiche was a father, a husband, a son, a brother, an uncle and most of all, a friend to anyone willing to talk to him.

Awards In His Name
A few awards in the Buffalo area are now named after Dad.  Buffalo High School awards one to three recipients each school year with the "Kurt Weiche Friends of Education Award".  His tireless commitment to youth, sports and the students at BHS made a difference to many and that is what this award recognizes.  I (Aaron) was lucky enought to receive this award in 2001 for my sports broadcasting for KRWC the following year after Dad had passed.  It's a good feeling to see an award bearing his name and to be the recipient.  It was a wonderful gesture from the high school and very appreciated.

The Buffalo Chamber of Commerce awards the "Kurt Weiche Memorial Outstanding Citizen Award" each year to an outstanding Buffalo resident making a difference in the community.

Still thought of 5 years later
Dad (Kurt) won an award from the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches and the State High School League for his contribution and dedication to broadcast High School Wrestling on 3/6/04.  They only give out 1 per year to a media member and it was great to see him recognized almost 5 years after he has been gone.  We have numerous awards for his incredible efforts in athletics, civic, and charity work but this was special to still be on others minds the same way he stays on ours.  He was nominated by 4 different area coaches and the awards banquet had about 1000 people in attendance. The MWCA speaker delivered a very nice speech with numerous quotes from different coaches on how passionate and giving Dad was.
